Zinc: the quiet half of ZnSe

Nobody writes poems about zinc. In this factory it is the cation that makes the lattice cubic, the metal we evaporate, and one of the first places a dirty charge ruins a laser-grade plate.

ZnSe is a II–VI compound. The group-II atom is zinc. Swap it for cadmium and you have CdSe — a different bandgap, a different color, a different industry (and a different toxicity conversation). Keep zinc and swap selenium for sulfur and you have ZnS, which we also respect but do not grow here. KM’s reactor is a ZnSe reactor. The zinc charge is not a branding detail.

Metal in, crystal out

Elemental zinc melts at 419.5 °C and boils at 907 °C. We do not melt ZnSe in this process. We put zinc metal into a temperature regime where it has useful vapor pressure, and we let that vapor meet hydrogen selenide at a hot mandrel. The solid that deposits is ZnSe. The hydrogen leaves. If the zinc is dirty — residual metals, oxides, the wrong tramp elements — some of that dirt partitions into the deposit. At 10.6 µm you pay for it as absorption, which is to say as heat in a focusing lens.

That is why “zinc” on this site does not mean galvanizing sheet. It means a controlled metal source for a II–VI CVD. The ingot on the loading bench is closer to a semiconductor charge than to a hardware-store anode.

Why zinc, not something more exotic

The zincblende lattice with Zn2+ and Se2− (chemists will fight me on the ionicity — it is a polar covalent semiconductor, not rock salt) sits at a bandgap that still transmits a slice of the visible. That is the engineering reason we still use it in 2026 for CO2. A narrower-gap II–VI would go opaque too early. A wider-gap oxide would not give you 10.6 µm without a fight. Zinc is the boring, correct cation.

Mechanically, zinc does not make ZnSe hard. Knoop ~110 is closer to a soft crystal than to BK7. The zinc–selenium bond is not a diamond bond. Design the mount and the cleaning SOP as if you were handling something that will take a fingerprint and a fingernail equally well.

If you are specifying a blank, you do not need to write “zinc purity 6N” on the drawing unless your incoming QA actually measures it. Write the grade (laser or optical), the wavelength, the size, and the absorption or scatter you will reject on. We translate that into a boule.
